Fun Comparing Length

This week in math we compared the length of objects, and discussed the vocabulary longer, shorter, and the same or equal. In one activity I gave each student a piece of yarn that was 12 inches. Any size would have worked, but it was much easier cutting them the same length that way. Then they were asked to find one thing in the room that was either shorter, longer, or the same size as the string. We used a Venn diagram to show our results. It was really interesting to see their thinking process as they walked around the room to find their object. They had lots of variety in their choices. This is a great activity to do at home as well.
